* This unit was designated merely as the Security Platoon,
Third Infantry Division. It was attached to Headquarters & Headquarters Company,
3rd Infantry Division. It was a special, "elite" platoon, of unique design.
There were five squads of eight each, armed with one machine gun, one rocket
launcher and one BAR per squad. The heavy armament was to allow its special
mission. The platoon was to provide security for the Division Commander and
generally the Division Headquarters, ie. perimeter security such as roadblocks,
etc, as well as the "G Sections" at Division Headquarters. If you have other units that you would like placed here,

Operations within the
Campaigns |
The reason for this is because an operation and a campaign are two
different things. For the purposes of this message, an Operation is
named by a unit, like the 3ID naming "Operation Marne Avalanche", or
by someone in DOD who at the beginning of the conflict called it
"Operation Iraqi Freedom". A campaign, on the other hand, one that
will be listed on a unit's lineage and honors, is named by a
specific DOD organization, the Military Awards Branch (telephone
number is 703-325-8700) well after the campaign has begun and
usually after it has ended. Each campaign has certain criteria: time
limitations, combat zone area, percentage of a unit that must be in
the area at the appropriate time for the unit to get the campaign
credit, etc. (For example, the Sicily campaign in WWII has a time
limitation of 9 July 1943 for ground troops to 17 August 1943 and
the combat zone was Sicily and adjacent waters. Any unit that
arrived in Sicily after 17 August 43 did not get credit for that
campaign. The War Department published the campaign names,
geographical and time limits, and names of units receiving for the
campaign credit in a GO months after the campaign was over.) Only the bullets were real! |
