Remembrance of Martin Markley
by Bruce Monkman

Martin Markley
President 1998-1999
By now you may have noticed in the June issue of the WATCH, that Martin Markley Outpost 22, passed away April 14, 2015. His wife, Margaret passed away the early part of February, I don’t have an exact date. These two wonderful people have been members of the Society for many years, plus being very active in helping to make it a better operating organization. Martin was Society president in 1998 - 1999 and had been Outpost 22 secretary-treasurer for numerous years.

One thing Martin always tried to do and live by is, if there are regulations on running an organization, obey those rules, but if anything needs corrected or improved, take the correct steps to make that improvement.

He served in the Korean War as a Captain, was wounded severely, and was thought of highly by the men under him. For a more complete history of Martin, and if you have a computer, Google his name, Martin Markley and click on — Korean War Educator Memories of Martin Markley- it gives a wonderful in depth story of part of his life.

Martin and I was quite close the last few years of his life via e-mail and phone. I had visited the Markleys when they lived in Fullerton, but when they moved to the assisted living facilities he didn’t seem to like that type of living and I had the impression he didn’t want anybody to visit them there. So I didn’t.

He was a good soldier, a good man and father and husband. He is missed. Bruce Monkman-OP22

Brig. Gen. James E. Rainey
named Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division

Brig. Gen. James E. Rainey
May 29, 2015 (FORT STEWART, Ga.) – Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Ray Odierno, announced today that Brig. Gen. (Promotable) James E. Rainey will succeed Maj. Gen. Mike Murray as commander of the 3rd Infantry Division.
Murray and Rainey have known each other for many years. “There’s no one I’d rather hand over the division colors to. I can think of no one more qualified than Jim to take the helm of the Marne Division,” said Murray. “I know he will serve the Soldiers, Civilians and Family members of the division well.”

Rainey currently serves as Commandant of the U.S. Army Infantry School, U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, Fort Benning, Ga. Murray is the commander of the 3rd Infantry Division and currently serving in Afghanistan as the Deputy Commanding General–Support for U.S. Forces Afghanistan. A date for the change of command has not been set and Murray’s next step has not been determined.

Murray said he remains focused on completing the mission at hand – the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, and maintaining high standards in executing everything the division is engaged in worldwide. He is equally focused on taking care of the Soldiers, Civilians and Families who are deployed or back home at Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and Kelley Hill.

Murray went on to say the Marne Division and Coastal Georgia will be lucky to have a leader like Jim Rainey.
“When the time comes to hand off the Division, I have no doubt that he is the right man, at the right time to carry on the high standards set by the 3rd ID and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield," Murray said. "The division’s outstanding efforts around the world combined with the recent sixth Army Community of Excellence win by the installation is the kind of momentum he'll continue when he takes command. I have no doubt he will also deepen the already strong bonds we enjoy with our southeast Georgia neighbors.”
